OUGD404: Study Task 03 - Grids

Today's lecture was about grids and the importance of them, especially within editorial design. Grids are heavily used in things such as newspapers, magazines etc. and the reason for them is that they give structure to the page and allow for a consistent layout throughout every page. This makes for faster reproduction, for example when creating a new issue of a magazine, the grid will be a preset template to allow for quick organisation of content for the editorial designers.

For the study task, we had to take a page from newspaper and create a grid based upon the layout of that page.

A group consisting of me and three other students created two grids from the spreads, which were taken from the 'i' newspaper. The reason behind why a newspaper like this has such a consistent, structured grid is that it's very formal and has a lot of written content that has to be organised. Especially considering how, for the most part, newspapers are a professional piece of work they need to be structured in a professional way hence the tidy and clean layout that the grid creates. Not only that but given how frequently new newspapers are generated with new content, the grid makes for for quick reproducibility by allowing the editors to quickly organise all of the content into double page spreads.
