OUGD406: 2015 Secret 7 Vinyl Cover Designs

In preparation for our first studio brief within this module, that being take part in the competition brief Secret 7, we were set the task of designing vinyl covers for the previous year's Secret 7. Those songs being:

The Chemical Brothers - Let Forever Be
Diana Ross & The Supremes - Reflections
The Maccabees - Go
Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
The Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers
St Vincent - Digital Witness
Underworld - Born Slippy (Nuxx)

The idea behind secret 7 is to create one unique one-off vinyl cover for a particular song of your choosing and so for this task we were asked to create one slightly more obvious cover and one more ambiguous and abstract.

I chose to design covers for The Rolling Stones - Dead Flowers.

The first and more obvious designs of the two is a picture of a dead flower broken down into three sections representing the deterioration of the flower through the break down of the colour layers within the photograph.

As for the second design, the song lyrics talk a lot of loneliness and also make a mention of a basement. Given the cliche look of a basement is a single lightbulb hanging within a dark and gloomy room I thought that a design incorporating that, whilst at the same time evoking a feeling of loneliness, would make for an ambiguous vinyl cover.
