OUGD406: Studio Brief 04 - Speaking from Experience (Initial Thoughts)

Initial Thoughts

Thinking back to when I first started university, considering the huge jump it was to move not only to a big city from a small town, but also onto a brand new course it was extremely daunting. At that point any form of advice for me would have been extremely useful given that most things were new to me, along with everyone else for the most part.

So for this brief I thought the most useful thing to product would be some form of advisory piece, giving little tips/tricks or just general bits of advice to the freshers in the hope to allow them to get around things easier.

Things at the time that I could have done with knowing is stuff such as knowing to book your print slots well in advance to avoid disappoint or frustration nearer the times of deadlines, such as around this time of year.

One thing to consider when doing this brief is to consider how it will be presented to freshers, considering the amount of flyers and promotional material that people get during freshers 90% of it will be disregarded and so I don't want this piece to fall under that category.

Possibly making something 3D or more substantial than just a typical A5 leaflet or fold out poster would mean people would not only take more interest in it, but potentially keep it as a reminder of what's to come throughout the year. Considering that most people like to fill their room with bits of art/posters etc. it may fit in with this and get the ball rolling as far decoration goes.

Another consideration is to maybe make something that would double up as something useful for a student, given a lot if not most students drink some form of tea or coffee possible doing tea coasters so that they'll become an integral part of student flats/rooms etc. and would hopefully double up as a nice visual to look at considering most tea coasters are plain and not always that appealing.

Few examples of carefully designed tea coasters:
